Following Thursday’s match, Alston officially stepped away as head coach of the Hawks boys tennis program, closing a chapter that included conference championships, state tournament appearances, lifelong relationships, and the development of tennis across all of Lenoir County.

North Lenoir’s postseason run came to an end Tuesday afternoon in one of the most tightly contested matches of the season, as First Flight escaped Bill Fay Park with a 5-4 victory in a dual team matchup that stretched more than three and a half hours and was ultimately decided by tiebreaks.

The NCHSAA finalized the men’s dual team tennis playoff brackets, with multiple local teams earning top-four seeds and first-round byes, including Greene Central (#2), Goldsboro (#4), North Lenoir (#4), and C.B. Aycock (#3). The playoffs begin Monday, with state championship matches set for May 15-16 at the Burlington Tennis Center.

Despite dropping two tight non-conference matches late in the week, the Hawks responded with a 7-2 victory over North Johnston to lock in their fourth consecutive conference championship. North Lenoir finished a perfect 10-0 in conference play and 13-5 overall heading into postseason competition.

North Lenoir continued its strong season with dominant wins over Ayden-Grifton and Southwest Edgecombe, improving to 8-3 overall and 5-0 in conference play. Seniors Casey Alston and Maddox Smith remain unbeaten in both singles and doubles, leading the Hawks’ early success.
