Blue Devils Overcome Wildcats 8-5

With a blend of youthful talent and strategic play, the South Lenoir Blue Devils carved out an 8-5 victory over the Richlands Wildcats, despite some self-admitted “dumb mistakes” acknowledged by Head Coach Paul Novicki. The Blue Devils’ resilience shone through, as Novicki praised Richlands’ persistence, highlighting their never-say-die attitude that kept the game competitive until the very end.

Reed Davis brought significant offensive firepower, contributing four RBIs on three hits, including two critical doubles that fueled South Lenoir’s offense.

The leadership for South Lenoir comes from a duo of seniors who, as Coach Novicki notes, have been pivotal in guiding a team primarily composed of underclassmen. The Blue Devils’ youth, while occasionally leading to some inconsistencies, has been carrying the team’s performance, promising even more cohesion as the season progresses.

South Lenoir’s aggressive base running was on full display as they stole six bases throughout the game, with Braxton Byrd swiping two and demonstrating his keen base-running instincts. This aggressive play extended to their disciplined approach at the plate, which earned them 11 walks, underscoring a patient and strategic offense.

On the mound, Hayden Marshburn and Braden Barnett handled the pitching duties effectively. Marshburn, starting the game, allowed only one hit and two runs (zero earned) over two innings while striking out four. Barnett came in relief, pitching four innings with zero runs and five strikeouts, maintaining the Devils’ lead through the middle innings.

“I felt good,” Barnett said. “My breaking ball and getting me ahead early is what really kept me in it.”

For the Wildcats, Hayden Turner led the offense with one hit in four at-bats, while Lucas Roberts, Miguel Medina, Jaden Goins, and Braeden Costello each contributed with an RBI.

The Wildcats’ tenacity was evident as they put up a good fight, with Roberts leading their patience at the plate by drawing two walks. They managed to turn one double play in the game, showcasing their defensive capabilities.
