Greene Central Dominates NCHSAA 2A East Regional Tennis Championships

KINSTON, N.C. — The NCHSAA 2A East Regional Tennis Championship concluded this weekend with exceptional performances from Greene Central High School. Both singles and doubles teams from the school showed prowess on the courts, making this a historic moment for the program.

Singles Showdown

In singles, Anna Katherine Medlin and Grace Baggett represented Greene Central with aplomb. Medlin, who clinched the singles championship, was an epitome of grit and determination as she defeated her previously undefeated rival Ellie Spear from Edenton Holmes, 4-6, 6-3, 4-1 ret. Medlin's win broke Spear's 21-0 streak and ended her two-time championship run.

Grace Baggett also put up a stellar performance, ultimately qualifying for States with a #4 ranking in the East. While she couldn't defeat Spear in the semifinals, Baggett did advance far enough to secure a spot in the State qualifiers.

Dominance in Doubles

In doubles, the pairing of Rylee Greene and Aubree Smith was unstoppable. They defeated Natalia Buchta and Cora Walker of Manteo in the championship finals, finishing 6-2, 7-5. The duo's synergy on the court seemed to only improve as the tournament progressed.

Coach's Corner

"I’m thrilled for our girls individually and our program here at Greene Central," said Greene Central Head Coach Tim Medlin. He was nearly speechless when his daughter Anna Katherine won the singles championship. "We managed to not only post a perhaps unbreakable State sports record at 30 years as conference champions, but put an exclamation mark on that milestone season by finishing ranked #1 in the State and now securing both the singles and doubles Regional titles."

On Grace Baggett's State qualification, Coach Medlin commented, "So proud of Grace in qualifying for States, posting as #4 in the East while being our team’s #4 player."

Regarding the doubles team of Rylee and Aubree, he observed, "Rylee and Aubree just kept growing week after week until they became a force this weekend. Rylee was strong in securing her second title and Aubree began to shine like I knew she could."
