A season of soaring highs came to an abrupt end for the North Lenoir Hawks as they fell 3-1 to Manteo in the second round of the NCHSAA 2A East Playoffs. Despite entering the game with a 17-game winning streak, North Lenoir could not muster enough to outlast a resilient Manteo team.

A Hard-Fought Battle

The match got off to a rocky start for North Lenoir as Manteo claimed the first set, 25-19. However, the Hawks showcased their resilience by storming back to dominate the second set, 25-15.

“I am really proud of them, we could be down and find a way to win,” said Heather Carson, North Lenoir’s volleyball coach.

Just when it seemed like North Lenoir had found their footing, Manteo came roaring back, taking the third set 25-18.

A Nail-Biting Finish

Heading into the fourth set down two sets to one, North Lenoir appeared flat, falling behind 8-0 in the early goings. Yet, the team showed signs of life.

“We were coming back and got it tied, and just couldn’t get over the hump. Things just didn’t go our way,”

Carson reflected. Lakyn Whitley delivered back-to-back powerful hits, tying the game at 23-23 and injecting a renewed sense of hope among the North Lenoir faithful.

A Season to Remember

Despite the heart-stopping comeback, North Lenoir couldn’t sustain the momentum, ultimately falling to Manteo and bringing their remarkable season to a close.

“My seniors, I got four of them, just watching them grow as freshmen now into seniors, I am just really proud of them not only as volleyball players but as young ladies,” Carson said, emphasizing the personal growth and maturity she has witnessed over the years.
