Undefeated Woodington Softball and Baseball Teams Remain Hot

DEEP RUN, NC - Woodington Middle School's softball and baseball teams maintained their undefeated records with impressive victories over Jones Middle School yesterday. The Lady Raiders continued their winning streak with a 22-4 triumph in softball, while the baseball team secured a 9-5 win.

In the softball game, 6th grader Lyndsey Philyaw showcased her skills on the mound, delivering a commendable pitching performance. The Lady Raiders' offense was equally remarkable, with Jersey Sasnett (single, 2 doubles, and a triple), Kylee Weston (2 doubles and a triple), Jade Sasnett (2 singles and a double), Rylan Wade (single, double, and triple), and Samantha Holland providing key hits to extend the lead. The team looks forward to facing the Lady Cavaliers in their final game of the season today at Woodington.

On the baseball field, Woodington defeated Jones Middle School 9-5. Liam Barwick earned the win, pitching three innings and allowing just one hit, one run, two walks, while striking out three batters. Austin Clements came in for relief, pitching an inning and two-thirds of shutout baseball and striking out four of the six batters he faced.

The Raiders' top hitters included Kam Rouse (3-3) with a double, two singles, and two RBIs, Austin Clements (2-4) with a triple and single, and Jaylyn Mills (1-3) with a single and an RBI.

Jones Middle School showed determination and improvement, despite the loss. Notable performances included 6th grade catcher Devin Coward going 1-2 with a run, 8th grade outfielder Dj Hall going 1-3 with two stolen bases and a run, and 6th grader Logan Murphy striking out four in four innings of relief pitching and going 1-3 at bat.

Coach Zach Sellers of Jones Middle School praised his team's effort.

"We didn’t win, but we played our hearts out today. The first game against those guys, we struggled on defense and offense with a 22-2 defeat. But today, we hung in there for a 9-5 ball game."

He noted the growth his team has made throughout the season, adding, "Sixth grader Logan Murphy pitched several solid innings in relief, and our bats were very active. If a few more calls go our way, who knows, maybe we could’ve done the unthinkable against a stout team. But I’m thrilled to see the growth we’ve made throughout this season, and the core of our team is, in fact, returning next year."

The Raiders of Woodington will end their season today at home against Frink Middle School. They hope to keep their unbeaten streak going.
