Sumner, Joyner Power Woodington Raiders to 16-2 Rout of Contentnea Savannah
INSTON – Cannon Sumner delivered a masterclass at the plate Wednesday, driving in four runs on three hits to lead the Woodington Raiders to a 16-2 road victory over Contentnea Savannah School.
Sumner fueled the offense with RBI singles in the first, second, and third innings, finishing 3-for-3 with a pair of stolen bases. His big day helped Woodington (8-1) complete a season sweep of CSS while extending their win streak to four.
The Raiders jumped out early with a six-run first inning, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Sumner and an RBI single from Jackson Taylor, who finished 2-for-2 with multiple stolen bases and two runs scored.
Woodington added six more in the second. Joyner and Taylor each brought in a run with singles, Taylor scored again on a tag-up, and Sumner knocked in another before two more came across on a CSS error.
Joyner stayed red-hot, going 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. The eighth-grader is now batting .722 on the year with 14 RBIs and 12 runs scored. He also stole two more bases, giving him double digits on the season.
Winston Faircloth earned the win on the mound, tossing four innings while giving up just three hits and two runs. He struck out three and walked one, giving Woodington a strong start on the road.
The Raiders totaled 11 hits and a staggering 15 stolen bases. Tyson Whaley, Sumner, and Taylor each swiped multiple bags, while the team drew nine walks in a patient offensive display.
