Summer Notebook: Greene Central 7-on-7 FCA football camp

Greene Central is coming off a great 10-win season but the Rams roster was senior heavy. How heavy? The Rams seniors scored 51 of the 65 touchdowns last season. The Rams go into the off-season looking to develop their own identity with so many new starters in place. Nothing will prepare the Rams better than the FCA team football camp.

“This helps us establish the identity by finding the things we do well and finding the things we don’t need to do,” Greene Central’s head football coach Jay Wilson.

The FCA team football camp set the Rams to face off in 15 games against teams from all over the state. Though no official scores or stats were recorded, GC made a mark by winning or tying most of their games. Their three-day camp culminated in promising ties with 2A state champions East Duplin and 4A powerhouse Cleveland County, showing a clear progression each day.

Wilson, now in his fifth stint at the FCA Camp, champions the experience for his team.

“I think it is an early preseason, summer session test,” Wilson said. “We get to identify some things, see who is a competitor, and see some things you just can’t see when you're practicing by your self.”

The FCA Camp is about more than just football. It also fosters fellowship among athletes, imparts life lessons through speakers, and enhances the understanding of Christianity.

Wilson emphasizes that he wants his players to nurture their spiritual side during the camp. "Everyone's path is different," he says. "Some may be church-goers on Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday, while others don't attend but are some of the most spiritual individuals you could meet. Here, you can find your own path, your own way, and use that for the rest of your life."

Trey’s WAY TOO EARLY overall assessment on the Rams:

GC looked very small with some lanky athletes. However, looks can fool you. The Rams took a couple of games to get going but when they started clicking they were very dangerous. The offense scored ALOT. To add icing on the cake, the Rams alternated 1st team varsity offense and 1st team JV offense every series in every gameq. GC has some fixes with communication and awareness on the defensive side of the ball but overall a very good showing for Greene Central.
