Summer Notebook: Girls' Summer League Basketball
I had the opportunity to watch a series of women's summer league basketball games at Holloway tonight. The league, featuring teams from Kinston, North Lenoir, Greene Central, Farmville, JH Rose, and West Craven, serves as a key tool for player development and learning.
In the first match, Greene Central fell to West Craven 45-25. Despite the Rams' efforts to keep it close at the end of the first quarter, the Eagles quickly widened the gap. West Craven's Yates sisters, Shalawn and Alissa, proved too quick, skillful and dominant. The Rams' Arlisha Mason scored seven points, while An'nysha Wooten finished with 10. Notably, several of the Rams' role players demonstrated significant improvement.
The standout game of the night pitted North Lenoir against Kinston High, with Kinston triumphing 64-38. Despite the lopsided score, the contest was extremely competitive. Both squads recently lost some senior leadership but had returning key starters, including Kinston's Carmen Davis and Kyonna Kelly, and the Hawks' Shamaya Lynch. Kelly led all scorers with 18 points. However, this match truly highlighted the newcoming freshmen. Big indicator for a bright future in girls' basketball at North Lenoir and Kinston High.
Kinston had multiple freshman play and make an impact. Viking guard Nashelya Mason earned the most minutes out of the Khigh freshman and she looked like she belonged. Mason nailed multiple corner 3pters, pushed the ball up court comfortably and even got dirty in the paint snagging rebounds. The other Viking freshman K’niyah Whitfield brings the straps with her on-ball defense. Whitfield playing a reserved role but when she steps on the court she brings it! A defensive specialist that will not let you breathe with her on ball defense. Whitfield showed plenty of potential and grit.
North Lenoir’s freshman Ta’sheena Lynch displayed the most potential out of all the girls not the court, freshman or not. Lynch comes from the long line of ballers in her family and the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. The freshman Hawk stands around 6’1-'6’2 with a wide wingspan. She showed all tools of the game including bringing the ball up court, finsihing in the paint, making good decisions and lead the Hawks in scoring with 13 points.
Watch out! These freshman are going to be a force this winter!
