South Lenoir JV baseball wins the battle of the undefeated against North Lenoir
LAGRANGE, N.C. – The South Lenoir Junior Varsity Devils emerged victorious in a showdown between the last remaining undefeated baseball teams in Lenoir County on Friday, defeating the North Lenoir JV team 10-5 at the Swamp.
North Lenoir began their offensive push in the second inning, with Miken Williams driving in two runs on a single. However, South Lenoir quickly responded in the top of the third, scoring one run when Gage Howard grounded out. North Lenoir answered back with a run of their own, as Aiden Clark doubled on the first pitch of his at-bat, bringing in another run.
The game-changing moment came in the fourth inning when South Lenoir JV Devils pulled ahead for good, scoring six runs. Dakota Malpass was hit by a pitch, driving in a run, followed by Evan Grady drawing a walk to score another run. Noah Rouse then singled on a 1-1 count, adding another run to the tally.
"Caden threw a good game," said the South Lenoir coach. "Our defense made some plays, and we came out with the win."
Camden Sawyer started on the mound for the South Lenoir JV Devils, pitching six and a third innings while allowing six hits and five runs and striking out five. "We did good," said Sawyer. "I felt like I could have done better, but as we got further into the game, my offspeed really started working."
Wristen Honeycutt started for North Lenoir, allowing one hit and four runs over three innings and striking out three. Whitt Johnson and Williams provided relief, pitching three innings and one inning, respectively.
Rouse led the South Lenoir JV Devils in hits, going 2-for-5 at the plate. Clark was North Lenoir's top hitter, with two hits in three at-bats.
With this win, the South Lenoir Junior Varsity Devils solidify their position as the only undefeated team in Lenoir County.
