Kinston High School struggled to find their footing in a 60-12 defeat against Southwest Onslow during their third conference game.
The Vikings kicked off the match on a positive note. Quarterback Keyshawn Herring connected with wide receiver Justin Good for a 15-yard reception, positioning the Vikings on the 1-yard line. This set the stage for Herring's 1-yard touchdown run on the subsequent play.
However, the tide soon turned as the Vikings grappled with critical turnovers and missed assignments on both the offensive and defensive ends.
Coming out of halftime with a resolve to stage a comeback, the Vikings couldn't pull it together on either end of the ball.
“We just got to get back to the basics and fundamentals. You can’t have lapses like that against strong teams like Southwest Onslow. They capitalized on all our mistakes, and once again, the physicality of this league is taking its toll,” said Coach Corey Bryant.
