Jones Senior JV Wins but Varsity Falls
TRENTON, N.C. — The volleyball teams at Jones Senior High School experienced a mixed bag of results in their recent matches. The JV team continued their strong start to the season with a 2-0 win, while the varsity team faced a challenging 3-1 loss.
The JV team extended their impressive run with set scores of 25-18 and 25-22. Coach Jamie Harper was pleased with the team's performance, stating, "The team is continuing to work well together and communicate. We still have small things we are working to improve on, but overall I'm very pleased with their play so far." Standout performers for the JV team included Makenzie Maines with 7 service points and 5 aces, Aariel Jemison with 7 service points, 4 aces, and 3 kills, Harper Woolard with 6 service points, 3 aces, and 5 kills, and Taylor Brown with 5 service points, 2 aces, and 3 kills.
On the other side, the varsity team had a tough match, falling 3-1 with set scores of 21-25, 11-25, 25-22, and 17-25. Despite the loss, Coach Harper saw improvements, saying, "We gave the other team more control in the game by missing too many serves. Though I will say that floor coverage and hitting defense was much improved from the first time we played them. I'm seeing small improvements every game, whether it's a win or a loss, which shows me how hard the girls are working." Melanie Norzagaray led the team with 14 service points and 2 kills, Julie Cazares contributed 8 service points and 1 kill, and Riley Murphy dominated with 8 kills.
Looking ahead, the varsity team's current record stands at 3-2, already matching their win total from last season's disappointing 3-14 record. Jones Senior will host Hobbton on Tuesday at home, followed by an away game against Hobbton on Wednesday. Both teams show promise and are clearly working hard to improve with each game. The upcoming matches against Hobbton will be a true test of their mettle as they look to build on their early-season successes and lessons.
