Hawks used 9-run inning to fly by Southern Wayne

In a thrilling comeback on Monday, North Lenoir stole the lead late in the game to secure a 14-8 victory over Southern Wayne.

North Lenoir was down 4-0 in the fourth inning, and senior Jadien Garret decided to put them on his back. Garrett blasted his first varsity home run to score three runs for the Hawks. 

“I feel really good because I have been struggling this year. My first at bat, I hit one off the wall. I knew I had to get it out after that,” senior Jaiden Garret said of his performance.

Senior Jacob Suggs also played a pivotal role in the Hawks’ win, driving in five runs while going two for four at the plate. Suggs contributed crucial runs with a double in both the fifth and sixth innings. On the mound, Suggs led the Hawks to victory, pitching for three innings, allowing four runs on four hits, and striking out two.

Luke Cannon started the game for the Hawks, with the right-hander pitching four innings, allowing four runs on two hits, and striking out six.

Garret wasn’t the only Hawk to hit a longball today, as Senior Hunter Coulombe would hit his third home run of the season in the sixth inning.

The sixth inning was a very crucial one for North Lenoir. The defense would hang a zero on the board to keep the game tied 5-5. The Hawks had been knocking on the door of a big inning, and it finally happened. North Lenoir would go on to score nine runs in the bottom half of the sixth.

Southern Wayne tried to start a late-game rally by scoring two runs in the top of the seventh inning, but the damage was already done. The win was especially sweet for the Hawks, as Southern Wayne had defeated them 8-6 on March 7th.
