KINSTON - Perry Tyndall has added another honor to his championship résumé. The Kinston High School boys basketball coach was named North Carolina’s 2025-26 Coach of the Year in men’s basketball, Lenoir County Public Schools announced Tuesday.
The statewide recognition follows a 22-3 season in which Tyndall led the Vikings to the Eastern Region championship and the NCHSAA 3A state title in March. It was his fourth state championship as Kinston’s head coach and his seventh overall with the program.
Tyndall previously guided the Vikings to state titles in 2013, 2014 and 2015. He was also an assistant coach when Kinston won championships in 2008, 2010 and 2012. The March title game victory marked his 306th win as head coach, according to the school district.
In comments shared with LCPS, Tyndall directed the credit to his players and staff.
“Receiving an award like this is because of the great student athletes I get to spend a lot of time with throughout the year,” Tyndall said.
He also credited the assistant coaches who helped build the championship program, saying the recognition belonged to them as well.
A Kinston native and Kinston High graduate, Tyndall graduated from the University of North Carolina in 2002 and began his coaching career at his alma mater. He later coached at Rochelle Middle School before returning to the Vikings’ varsity bench as an assistant in 2006. He became head coach ahead of the 2012-13 season.
LCPS Assistant Superintendent and Athletic Director Nicholas Harvey II praised Tyndall’s impact beyond basketball.
“He genuinely cares about the well-being of his student-athletes well beyond the classroom and basketball court,” Harvey said in the district’s report.
The honor places Tyndall in contention for sectional and national coaching awards through the National Federation of State High School Associations. The next round of honors is typically announced in January.
