Jones Sr. Falls Tough Opener: Coach Sellers Eyes Growth After Loss

TRENTON, N.C. — The East Columbus Gators traveled to Trenton to face the Jones Sr. Trojans in a non-conference matchup, marking the opening week of high school football. The Gators’ run game proved dominant from start to finish, with running back Davonte Marshburn leading the charge with four rushing touchdowns leading to a 62-0 win.

Marshburn’s standout performance included a 42-yard carry that resulted in a touchdown in the second quarter. Teammates Matthew George, CJ Waddell, and Justice Chavis each contributed a rushing touchdown, amplifying the Gators’ offensive prowess.

On the other side of the field, the young Jones Sr. team is navigating a transition under first-year Head Coach Zach Sellers.

“Right now we are young. Sometimes we see mistakes, some are young mistakes. They’re gonna have to grow, and we’re gonna grow as a team and a coaching staff,” Sellers said. “We did see some bright spots tonight.”

Despite the loss, Coach Sellers is already looking ahead to next week’s non-conference matchup against South Lenoir, focusing on the challenges and opportunities it presents.

“We are gonna have to stop Will Harrell and his pass game. I know he likes to throw the ball. We are gonna have a good week of practice next week,” he emphasized.

Jones Sr. will host South Lenoir next Friday at home, providing another opportunity for the team to grow under Coach Sellers’ leadership. This season marks a new era for Jones Senior, and the first game under Coach Sellers sets the stage for a year of development and potential success.
