Former Kinston High Standout Named HBCU Athlete of the Week

Isaac Parson, a standout guard for Winston-Salem State University and a Kinston High School alumnus, has been honored as the HBCU National Player of the Week. Parson, now in his junior year, has been turning heads with his exceptional performance on the court, culminating in a week where he averaged 23.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 2.0 steals. His impressive 52 percent shooting from the field and 40 percent from three-point range were pivotal in securing two wins for the Rams.

In a particularly noteworthy game against Elizabeth City State, Parson recorded his first double-double of the season. He racked up 21 points and 11 rebounds, alongside four assists and two steals, while shooting an impressive 62 percent from the field. This performance, along with a career-high 25 points in another game, exemplifies Parson’s growth and skill as a player.

Parson’s achievements will be spotlighted on the nationally syndicated sports talk show BOXTOROW with Donal Ware. The show, which celebrates the successes of athletes from historically black colleges and universities, will feature Parson on radio stations across the country, including WWBG in the Triad, every Saturday at 10 a.m.

Reflecting on his recent success, Parson shared insights into his approach to the game. “I took the time over break to look at what I did through the first semester and identify areas for improvement,” he said. “Playing at a high level feels good, but I want to make it consistent. That means going hard every day in practice, being coachable, and making the right reads.”

Parson also maintains a strong connection to his roots in Kinston, a town known for producing talented basketball players who often go pro. “I still keep up with Kinston. I watch them every time they play,” Parson shared. “I feel it’s important for the players there to look up to me. I’m playing college basketball, and I’m where they want to be. Being that I played at Kinston, guys are excited to see me come back to see them play or to the practices.”
