Wriston Honeycutt Dominates on the Mound as North Lenoir Opens Season with 9-1 Win Over Southern Wayne

North Lenoir kicked off its 2024 baseball season in commanding fashion, securing a 9-1 road victory over 3A Southern Wayne behind a stellar performance from senior pitcher Wriston Honeycutt.

Honeycutt was electric on the mound, throwing six innings of one-hit ball while striking out 12 and allowing just one run and two walks. The right-hander also contributed at the plate, going 1-for-1 with an RBI and drawing three walks. Garrett Byrd closed the game out in the seventh, striking out three and walking one in a hitless inning of relief.

North Lenoir Breaks the Game Open in the Fifth

The Hawks struck first in the opening frame when Mason Sasser singled to drive in a run. Southern Wayne tied the game at one in the fourth inning after a six-pitch at-bat by Brayden McKee resulted in an RBI single to left field.

In the fifth inning, North Lenoir’s offense erupted for eight runs, taking full control of the game. Carter Chadwick singled in a run to start the rally, followed by an error that allowed two more to score. Honeycutt then helped his own cause with an RBI single, Ethan Smith drew a bases-loaded walk, Blayden Pridgen ripped a two-RBI single, and Byrd capped off the big inning with a sacrifice fly.

North Lenoir finished with five hits but showed patience at the plate, drawing 12 walks while striking out eight times in 25 at-bats.
