South Lenoir Stumbles to Croatan

South Lenoir Stumbles to Croatan

NEWPORT— In an away game against Croatan, the South Lenoir girls' basketball team experienced a hard-fought battle, eventually falling short 42-37. Despite leading at halftime, challenges in the latter half of the game proved costly for the Lady Blue Devils.

Strong Start, Challenging Finish

South Lenoir started strongly, holding a 22-13 lead at halftime. However, the second half saw a shift in momentum. Foul troubles significantly impacted the team, with Katherine Thompson, Gracie Tyndall, and Lexy Heath fouling out. The injury of point guard Alexus Haddock in the fourth quarter further complicated matters for South Lenoir.

Croatan's Late Surge

Taking advantage of the Lady Blue Devils' diminished lineup, Croatan mounted a comeback, securing the lead with three minutes remaining and holding onto it until the end.

Standout Performances Despite Loss

  • Ty Midgett: 9 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals, 1 block

  • Lexy Heath: 8 points, 4 rebounds, 1 block

  • Alexus Haddock: 7 points, 2 rebounds, 3 steals, 1 block

  • Makenzie Herring: 6 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal

  • Katherine Thompson: 5 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal

Statistical Challenges

The team's shooting percentages were a concern, with 30% from the field and only 9% from three-point range. The Lady Blue Devils also struggled with discipline, committing 27 fouls and 21 turnovers.

Coach Pierce's Reflections

Reflecting on the game, Coach Pierce expressed disappointment but also saw positives, especially in the team's defensive efforts.

"Our offense will catch up to the defense as the season progresses," he affirmed. While acknowledging the tough environment and adjusting to some of the refereeing, he viewed the game as a good learning experience.

Next Game

The South Lenoir girls will look to rebound in their next game on Monday at Richlands, aiming to build on their defensive strengths and improve their offensive execution.
