Dontrez Styles transfers to Georgetown
Former Tar Heel Dontrez Styles announced Sunday that he will be transferring to Georgetown University, joining new head coach Ed Cooley. Styles made the decision after an official visit to the Georgetown campus just days prior.
The Kinston native's choice appeared to be between Georgetown and NC State, with the Hoyas securing his final visit. His time on campus seemingly convinced Styles that relocating to Washington D.C. was the best option for his future.
Styles and Cooley's strong connection played a significant role in the decision, as they aim to revitalize the Georgetown men's basketball program. Styles spoke to On3 about his commitment, stating, "The connection between me and coach Cooley has been great and I trust him. The opportunity is there and I’m ready to go take it and run with it.”
Playing time seemed to be the central issue behind Styles' original decision to transfer. Over his two seasons with the UNC basketball program, he struggled to secure a permanent role in the team’s rotation, resulting in a noticeable drop in games played during the 2022-2023 season.
Styles now aims to rewrite his narrative and earn a larger role with the Hoyas, hoping to showcase the skills that UNC basketball fans wished they had seen more of during his time in Chapel Hill.
