North Lenoir Softball Set for Strong Run in 2025 Season
Coming off an impressive 14-3 season the North Lenoir Hawks softball team enters 2025 with a sense of unfinished business and renewed determination.
First-year head coach Colby Miller, previously assistant, now at the helm, brings continuity and familiarity to the squad. He is joined by assistant coach Bobby Hatcher, reversing their roles from past seasons.
“Our goal is simple: control what we can control—attitude, effort, and hustle,” Coach said. “We have strong teams like South Lenoir and East Duplin on the schedule, but our aim is to play every game the right way and see where that takes us.”
The Hawks return several standout athletes who lit up the stat sheets last year. Junior Lakyn Whitley, described as a "spark plug," led the team batting .569, tallying 37 hits and 19 RBIs, and will be critical in setting the table again this season. Sophomore Kailey Bridwell (.541 avg., 33 hits, 27 RBIs) and senior Maddie Rouse (.532 avg., 25 hits, 34 RBIs, 6 HR) provide additional offensive firepower.
Rouse, committed to play Division II softball at USC Aiken, is not just a powerhouse at the plate but also a dependable pitcher who threw 86.1 innings last season, striking out 85 with a 4.95 ERA.
“Maddie is our leader, our workhorse,” Coach emphasized. “Her work ethic and reliability set the tone for this team.”
Catcher Alyssa Hatcher (.473 avg., 26 hits, 22 RBIs) remains crucial defensively. Her presence behind the plate is unmatched, providing leadership and stability that Coach considers invaluable.
"She’s as good as any catcher you'll find,” he said. "Watching Alyssa play is truly exciting."
Junior Hallie Fowler, who hit .394 and contributed on the mound, returns after pitching 11.2 innings in relief last season. She is expected to handle increased pitching responsibilities this year.
“Hallie is ready to take a step up," Coach noted. "Her composure in tight situations last season showed how valuable she can be in the circle.”
Senior Jayla Ross (.388 avg., 19 hits) and juniors Haley Hemby (.370 avg.) and Layla Wintzel (.347 avg.) also return, adding depth to a potent lineup.
Freshman talent is abundant, notably shortstop Allie Reaves, whose smooth glove work and sharp hitting have already caught the coaching staff’s attention.
“Allie might be one of the smoothest fielders I've seen," Coach said. "She’s incredibly coachable and will be exciting to watch.”
Freshman Norah Wine, a versatile utility player, is expected to make immediate contributions and holds significant potential for the Hawks' future.
Despite early challenges from weather delays in offseason preparations, the team’s commitment remains strong.
“The girls have shown incredible effort,” Coach said. “They’re ready. Now it’s about minimizing mistakes and maintaining confidence.”
With a balanced roster blending experience and youthful energy, North Lenoir softball has all the ingredients for a playoff run. Yet, the team's philosophy remains grounded.
"Every game matters," Coach stated. "We won't overlook anyone. If we take care of the little things, this could be a special year."
The journey for the Hawks starts now, and expectations are soaring.
