North Lenoir Snaps Losing Streak with Dominant Win Over Southwest Onslow
The North Lenoir Hawks entered their matchup against the Southwest Onslow Stallions on a three-game losing streak, searching for their first conference win of the season. Behind a dominant two-way performance from Garrett Byrd, the Hawks delivered, securing a 7-1 victory over the Stallions.
Byrd was the star of the night, excelling both on the mound and at the plate. He pitched six innings, allowing just one run while racking up an impressive 16 strikeouts. Offensively, he drove in three RBIs, including a two-run home run in the third inning.
“Garrett reset his thought process and absolutely lit it up tonight,” said Head Coach Cam Sherrer. “It took everyone, one through nine, and all the guys on the bench.”
The Hawks’ offense had a strong showing, with senior Payton Wiggins going 2-for-3 with two RBIs, senior Ethan Smith finishing 2-for-2 with a walk, and senior Mason Sasser adding a 1-for-2 night with an RBI.
“We had some slip-ups earlier this week and let one get away from us,” said Sherrer. “I told the guys to trust the process, and they definitely have—it showed tonight.”
The win snaps North Lenoir’s losing streak, improving their record to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Southwest Onslow drops to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
“Just to continue the same thing—each guy having each other’s back, pitching a good game, and swinging the bats well,” said Sherrer, looking ahead.
North Lenoir will try to carry their momentum into Monday’s matchup against Wallace-Rose Hill, while Southwest Onslow looks to bounce back against James Kenan.
