Blue Devils Dominate Panthers, Stay Perfect in Conference Play
The South Lenoir Blue Devils delivered another powerhouse performance on Friday night, cruising to a 5-1 victory over the East Duplin Panthers at home. With the win, the Blue Devils remain undefeated at 6-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Their dominance this season continues, outscoring opponents by an astonishing 80-13.
From the first pitch, South Lenoir took control. A three-run rally in the bottom of the first inning set the tone early, and the Blue Devils never looked back. The victory also extended their strong record against East Duplin to 18-5, further solidifying their dominance over the Panthers.
On the mound, Matthew "Tadpole" Rhodes was in complete command, throwing all seven innings in a masterful performance. He allowed just four hits, one walk, and struck out eight, picking up his second conference win of the season. The Panthers' lone run came in the sixth inning—unearned off an error—but Rhodes quickly regained his composure and shut the door.
South Lenoir’s offense was balanced and efficient. Jacob Howard was on base all night, drawing a walk in each of his three at-bats. Gage Howard, Matthew Rhodes, and Christian Coples each went 1-for-3, driving in three RBIs, ensuring that the Blue Devils’ offense kept pressure on East Duplin all game long.
Head coach Paul Novicki liked what he saw from his team, especially their effort at the plate. “I saw some fight,” Novicki said. “We’re still doing the things we preach. We came out swinging, got a win, and that’s all that matters.”
Rhodes, who controlled the game on the mound, emphasized how important it was to grab an early lead. “When we get a lead early, it makes it easier to pitch,” he said. “So, offense leads to good pitching.”
The Blue Devils continue to prove they’re a team to watch this season, maintaining their undefeated record and showing no signs of slowing down. As they move forward, South Lenoir’s dominant play signals they’re not just aiming for a conference title—but possibly something much bigger.
Next up, the Blue Devils will host Midway on Monday before traveling to Southwest Onslow next Friday for their next conference showdown.
