North Lenoir Hawks Edge Out Farmville in Nail-biter
Following a tough road defeat to Bunn on Monday, the North Lenoir Hawks displayed resilience with a strong performance against Farmville Central. The Hawks, who lead their conference with an undefeated record, aimed to maintain momentum ahead of a crucial away match against Southwest Onslow, currently tied for second place in the conference.
In Monday’s game, North Lenoir showcased their depth and strategic acumen. Wriston Honeycutt delivered an impressive outing, throwing six innings, allowing just three hits and two earned runs, along with five strikeouts. His performance on the mound was crucial, earning him the win as he remarked, "I felt pretty good coming out of the bullpen and I felt like I proved myself on the mound."
Adding firepower to the lineup, Blake Crawford hit a critical 3-run homer. Crawford adapted his technique to capitalize on the fast pitches, noting, "He was throwing really hard, I knew I had to get my foot down... I had a big leg kick all season, he was supplying the velocity so I knew I just had to put the barrel [on the ball]."
Coach Sherrer utilized his pitchers judiciously, given the tight schedule of three games this week. Jackson Jenkins, who had not seen much action recently, closed the game effectively. Pitching the final inning, Jenkins allowed no hits and recorded a strikeout, ensuring the save. Sherrer emphasized the strategic use of his bullpen, stating, "In a big situation, it is always good to have that arm coming out of the pen. It was good for him to get on the mound again and see some action going into Friday night."
Other notable performances included Ethan Smith, who went 2 for 3 with two runs scored, further highlighting the team's offensive strength.
Despite the win, Farmville Central had its moments of brilliance, particularly from Trey Willford, who shone both on the mound and at the plate. Willford pitched 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit and one earned run, striking out five. He also contributed offensively with a 2 for 3 performance, scoring one run and driving in three RBIs.
Overall, North Lenoir executed well when it mattered, with timely hitting and strong pitching across the board contributing to the team victory. As they prepare for the upcoming conference game against Southwest Onslow, the Hawks will look to carry this winning momentum forward.
