Landon Tyndall: The Blue Devil
Every school has athletes come in and leave their impact on the sports program.
Landon Tyndall, a senior at South Lenoir High School, has left an indelible mark on the Blue Devils sports program. Hailing from a family with a strong sporting legacy at South Lenoir, Tyndall's passion for baseball has seen him excel not just on the diamond but across multiple sports. As he prepares to make his transition to Chowan University, Tyndall reflects on his journey, his family's athletic history, and his aspirations for the future.
"We all are proud of him for setting his goals athletically and academically and working hard to accomplish both to put him in the position he is in,” Landon Tyndall’s dad David expressed about his son. “I just am really excited to see what is next for him. Great ballplayer and son, but just as important, a great person!"
Born and raised in La Grange, Tyndall started playing baseball at the tender age of four, with his father dedicating countless hours to honing his skills.
"He has always been one of those kids that couldn’t get enough of whatever sports he played," said David Tyndall. "At 4 years old he was playing baseball which from the time he picked up a glove and ball he fell in love with it. He was willing to play or practice anytime, anywhere, or place."
Following his parents' separation, Tyndall moved to Deep Run in the fifth grade and began forging friendships with future teammates such as Carson Stroud, Brady Sheppard, and Eli Day. Lucas West, another teammate, has known Tyndall his entire life.
Tyndall, like his father, aspired to play sports at South Lenoir and proudly followed in his footsteps. His father, a successful linebacker and basketball player, had winning records throughout his high school athletic career.
Baseball has always been Tyndall's favorite sport, but he also found success and enjoyment in football and basketball. In his senior year, he started as quarterback for the football team, played wide receiver in his junior year, took the position of forward on the basketball team, and alternated between pitcher, first base, and third base in baseball.
His football and baseball statistics are a testament to his talent and hard work. In his junior year, Tyndall shone on the baseball field, pitching in 12 games with a 6-1 record and a 2.29 ERA, notching up 42 strikeouts in 58 innings pitched. At the plate, he batted .385 with 25 hits, 15 RBIs, and 14 runs in 22 games. As a senior, he continued this impressive performance, batting .424 with 17 RBIs, 25 hits, and 20 runs in 19 games.
His football achievements were equally remarkable. Tyndall's eight thrown touchdowns were the most at South Lenoir since Cameron Parrish's 10 touchdowns in 2010. His 1,142 passing yards in his senior year set a new record for the school, as it was the highest total since the school started keeping stats on MaxPreps in 2009 – even more impressive when considering he played only eight games as a quarterback.
David Tyndall lauded his son's character and achievements, stating, "He’s a great athlete and an even better kid. I couldn’t be prouder of all that he has accomplished on and off the field." The Tyndalls have also been avid supporters of all sports at South Lenoir, with David adding, “We love supporting all sports. Been boosters the last couple of years.”
Tyndall's dedication to sports extends beyond personal achievements, as he values teamwork and camaraderie. He reflects on his time at South Lenoir with humility, saying, "I think I probably could have done a little bit more at South Lenoir, but I think I left a decent imprint." His family legacy has been a significant motivator, "Pretty much my whole family has gone to South Lenoir, so it's pretty much me just wanting to follow the same footsteps as my family."
As Tyndall prepares to join Chowan University, he remains grateful for the support and guidance he received from his family, friends, and coaches. His father's excitement about his future is palpable, "I just am really excited to see what is next for him." Tyndall is poised to continue his journey in his favorite sport, with the same unwavering passion for baseball that ignited his sporting journey as a child.
As he embarks on the next phase of his career, there's no doubt that he carries with him the lessons, experiences, and values forged during his time at South Lenoir High School. The legacy he leaves behind is one of resilience, dedication, and an unyielding love for the game.
