Lady Hawks start conference play with a victory

JACKSONVILLE--The North Lenoir softball team charged into conference play with an impressive 10-1 victory over Southwest Onslow. A combination of potent hitting, quality pitching, and timely defense contributed to the team's strong performance.

In the first inning, Maddie Rouse set the tone for the game with a two-run homerun. The Hawks continued to put pressure on Southwest Onslow throughout the game, scoring three runs in both the sixth and seventh innings.

Lakyn Whitley went 1-3, scoring two runs, contributing one RBI, drawing two walks, and stealing two bases. Hallie Fowler hit 2-4 (single, double), scored one run, and contributed one RBI. Fowler also pitched four innings, allowing only one hit and one run and striking out six batters while walking five and hitting one batter.

Maddie Rouse had a standout performance, going 1-2 with a home run, scoring three runs, and driving in two RBIs. She also pitched three innings, allowing no runs, one hit, striking out three, and walking one while hitting one batter.

Alyssa Hatcher went 1/4, hitting a triple and scoring one run, while contributing three RBIs. Alivia Whitley had a strong showing with a 3-5 performance, driving in two RBIs. Skylar Harrison went 0-4 but managed to contribute one RBI and was hit by a pitch.

Haley Hemby hit 2-4, scoring one run and stealing one base. Layla Wentzell went 0-1, scoring two runs, drawing two walks, and being hit by a pitch.

North Lenoir Coach Bobby Hatcher praised the team's performance, stating, "Good win to start conference play. Pitchers threw well and made some big pitches with runners on base. Defense was good. We had 10 hits with a few hard-hit outs, but we have to do a better job making adjustments at the plate early in the game. Overall, they played well, but we will have to step it up a notch because we play some good teams next week."

With this win, North Lenoir's record improves to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The Hawks will face Wallace-Rose Hill (7-2, 1-1) next Tuesday, March 21st.
