Kinston Vikings Fall to Washington Pam Pack Despite Late-Game Surge
The Kinston Vikings (2-1) entered their matchup against the Washington Pam Pack (0-2) sporting new gray jerseys and riding a two-game winning streak. However, early mistakes and missed opportunities led to a disappointing 12-7 loss.
The game started off on the wrong foot for the Vikings, who fumbled the opening kickoff, giving Washington excellent field position. The Pam Pack capitalized on the mistake, scoring an early touchdown. Kinston struggled to find any offensive rhythm in the first half, allowing Washington to add another touchdown before halftime.
Washington received the ball to start the second half, but the momentum shifted when Vikings' sophomore Cameron Hinnant intercepted a pass with nine minutes remaining in the third quarter. This set the stage for senior Jeremiah Hart, who punched in a two-yard touchdown. Hart finished the game with 43 rushing yards and 30 receiving yards.
Despite the late first-half touchdown, Kinston's defense held strong, preventing Washington from scoring any additional points. However, the Vikings squandered multiple scoring opportunities, including four turnovers on downs. One crucial turnover occurred on Washington's 3-yard line with nine minutes left in the fourth quarter.
"It all starts in the beginning. We never gave up, but we also never capitalized on our opportunities," said Coach Ryan Gieselman, reflecting on the drives that came up short.
Kinston's passing game improved in the second half, with senior quarterback Qurron Ross throwing for 195 yards on 35 attempts with 18 completions. Sophomore Tyreek Copper led the Vikings in receiving with eight catches for 104 yards.
The Vikings will look to rebound in their next game against county rival and conference foe South Lenoir (1-3).
