Kinston Swings into Action with USTA-Funded Court Upgrades
The City of Kinston has proudly announced the completion of the resurfacing project for the tennis courts at Bill Fay Park. The project, funded by grants totaling $25,000 from the United States Tennis Association (USTA) and its regional bodies, marks a significant upgrade for the local tennis facilities.
The national USTA contributed $11,500, with additional funds from USTA Southern ($8,500) and USTA North Carolina ($5,000). This financial support is part of the US Open Legacy Initiative, launched in celebration of Coco Gauff's 2023 US Open women’s singles title. The initiative aims to refurbish tennis courts nationwide, promoting accessibility and community health through sports.
Bill Fay Park's six tennis courts, which serve as home facilities for Lenoir County Public Schools' tennis teams and host various junior and adult tennis programs, were reopened to the public this week after the completion of resurfacing.
Lew Sherr, CEO of USTA, emphasized the importance of investing in public tennis facilities to inspire healthier communities. Coco Gauff also expressed her support for the initiative, underscoring her belief in the importance of making tennis a more accessible sport.
Scott Alston, Director of Kinston/Lenoir County Parks & Recreation, noted that the upgraded facilities at the Bill Fay Park/Treble Tennis Center would continue to provide quality programming for the community.
As part of the US Open Legacy Initiative, the newly refurbished courts will soon feature signage indicating that the upgrade was made possible in honor of Gauff’s notable US Open victory. This initiative is part of the USTA's broader efforts, which, since 2005, have impacted over 43,000 tennis courts and facilitated more than $610 million in infrastructure development through the Tennis Venue Services department.
The community is invited to enjoy and utilize the newly enhanced tennis facilities, which promise to be a cornerstone for developing local talent and fostering a love for the game of tennis in Kinston.
