Greene Central’s Dontrez Evans Signs with Shaw University Basketball

SNOW HILL — After four years of growing as a student-athlete and developing into one of Greene Central’s most well-rounded competitors, senior Dontrez Evans officially signed to play basketball at Shaw University on Thursday in front of family, coaches, and teammates.

The moment, filled with emotion and pride, was a culmination of steady growth, both on and off the court, for a player whose transformation didn’t go unnoticed.

“I’ve been able to watch him grow this year, even in the weight room,” said Rams head football coach Jay Wilson. “Turning over a new leaf and really embracing the weight room and knowing what it's going to mean for him and his future.”

Evans, a 6'0" guard, saved his best for last, averaging 12.3 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 3.5 steals per game during his senior season. He helped lead the Rams with his defense-first mentality and relentless energy, finishing his career with 46 games played and 2.9 steals per game over that stretch.

His emergence wasn’t just about the stats—it was about buying into growth.

“When he came to me at the beginning of the year and said, ‘Coach, I think I can play college basketball,’ I told him here’s what you have to do,” said Rams basketball head coach Blue Edwards, a former NBA player. “Learn to lead—vocally and by example. Become a better scorer. Sharpen your ball-handling. Learn how to compete and understand your identity as a player.”

Evans took that advice to heart.

He became Greene Central’s defensive anchor while elevating his offensive game—developing a reputation for being able to score, distribute, and fill any role the team needed. More importantly, he matured as a teammate.

“Man, I’m so proud of him,” Edwards said. “Through his hard work and efforts, he now gets a chance to choose the college where he wants to go play, where he wants to continue to be a student-athlete. I think the best basketball for this young man is still ahead of him.”

Evans’ signing ceremony served not only as a recognition of his basketball journey but also as a celebration of the character he's developed.

“I will be patiently watching in the wings cheering on his success like I did this year and the past couple of years,” Edwards added. “It’s been a pleasure to see his maturation process, and I think this guy is gonna do great things.”

When Evans took the microphone, the moment was heartfelt and reflective.

“With the gratitude of all the support I received throughout my high school basketball career—and the countless drives to practices and games from my parents—I’m truly blessed to have such a strong support system,” Evans said. “I thank God for blessing me with the talent and opportunities that have led me to this moment.”

“I’m ready to take on the challenges and opportunities that college basketball will bring. I’m committed to giving my all on and off the court. I can’t wait to proudly represent and make my loved ones proud.”

Now headed to Shaw University, a storied HBCU program in Raleigh, Evans carries with him the lessons and legacy of Greene Central.

“A very good defensive player that takes pride in that side of the ball,” one coach described. “On offense, he can score, pass, and do whatever is needed. That’s what makes him special.”

As for the next step?

“I’m very excited,” Evans said with a smile. “Just ready to get to the next level and show them what I have.”
