Greene Central Falls to Eastern Wayne in Season Opener
GOLDSBORO, N.C. – The Greene Central Rams, stepping onto the hardwood with a fresh roster and high aspirations, opened their basketball season against Eastern Wayne High School in Goldsboro. Coming off an impressive 23-7 record last season, the Rams faced a significant challenge: they lost their top nine scorers. Yet, in the face of this daunting reset, a new era of talent is rising, heralding an exciting season for Greene Central.
Sophomore Sensations: Coppedge and Avent Shine in Opener
The spotlight shone on sophomore Mez Coppedge, who, after a summer of turning heads in camps and all-star games, proved his mettle in the season opener. Coppedge, demonstrating a blend of skill and poise beyond his years, racked up an impressive 17 points, 10 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 2 steals. His performance wasn't just a personal triumph; it set the tone for the Rams, signaling a promising future.
Joining Coppedge in the scoring fray was fellow sophomore Sam Avent, contributing 9 points. Dontrez Evans also made his mark with 8 points, showcasing the depth of young talent Greene Central is nurturing.
Eastern Wayne's Dominance in the Paint
Despite the Rams' spirited performance, Eastern Wayne emerged victorious with a 63-53 win. Sophomore forward Charlie Thomas led the charge for the Warriors, amassing 23 points and 13 rebounds. His dominance in the paint was a key factor in Eastern Wayne's success. Jaquarius Carr finished with 12 points 10 rebounds and Izeiah Oates was big for the Warriors with 18 points.
A Salute to a Promising Coaching Career
While Eastern Wayne isn't within our usual coverage area, it's worth noting the achievement of North Lenoir Alumni Cleveland Williams, who marked his first win as a head coach. His journey and success add a compelling narrative to the local basketball scene. Salute to my friend, Coach Williams.
Looking Ahead: A Clash with Kinston
As Greene Central gears up to host Kinston on November 28th, both teams are hungry for their first win of the season. This upcoming game isn't just about the score; it's a test of resilience and a chance for emerging stars to shine.
