Blue Devils Stumbles Against Tigers
Deep Run— In a decisive defeat, the South Lenoir Blue Devils (1-6) fell 56-6 to the James Kenan Tigers (4-4) this past Friday evening. Despite a recovered onside kick to start the game and steal an initial possession from the Tigers, the Blue Devils could not translate it into points. The Tigers took the opportunity to make their mark early with an 8-yard touchdown run. An unfortunate lapse in defense allowed the Tigers to capitalize further with a 42-yard touchdown throw on a third-and-40. Head Coach Will Harrell remarked, "Our cornerback was in place, but he got outran."
Some glimmers of hope surfaced for the Blue Devils in the second quarter. Recently promoted from the JV team, sophomores Jackson Owens and Amare Walker teamed up for a 33-yard touchdown. Owens ended the night with 136 passing yards and Walker concluded with 42 yards. "Our squad is young but talented; we knew these guys could step up," said Harrell. But the Tigers quickly doused any hopes with another rushing touchdown. A subsequent fumble recovery by the Tigers led to a quick score. South Lenoir's misfortune continued when they threw a pick-six as halftime approached, setting the score at 35-6.
The third quarter was no less challenging for the Blue Devils. The Tigers stripped Owens on the first play, leading to a 7-yard rushing touchdown. Another interception thrown by South Lenoir set up yet another Tigers' ground score. An optimistic drive for the Blue Devils was spoiled by an additional pick, enabling the Tigers to broaden their lead to 56-6.
Though beleaguered, the Blue Devils' defense displayed resilience in the final quarter, keeping James Kenan off the board. Next on the schedule, South Lenoir will welcome Southwest Onslow (3-4) next Friday evening.
