Blue Devils Honor Mrs. Wooten in Thrilling Five-Set Match Against Bulldogs
In a night filled with emotion and community support, the South Lenoir Blue Devils (7-7) donned pink uniforms in honor of Mrs. JoElla Wooten, a local community member courageously battling breast cancer. Despite their valiant effort, they fell to the Wallace-Rose Hill Lady Bulldogs (13-3) in a thrilling five-set match.
The event was more than just a game; it was a fundraiser that successfully raised $3,176, bringing the total amount raised for Mrs. Wooten to $5,301. The funds were generated through raffles for gift baskets, cheesecakes, and a 50/50 raffle.
The Blue Devils, who had lost to the Bulldogs in straight sets earlier in the season, showed remarkable resilience. They pushed a formidable Bulldogs squad to a fifth and decisive set, ultimately losing 3-2.
The match was a rollercoaster of emotions and momentum. The Blue Devils lost the first set narrowly, 25-23, but roared back to dominate the second set, 25-15. The teams traded victories in the next two sets, setting up a dramatic fifth set, which the Bulldogs clinched 15-8. The win secured second place in the conference for Wallace-Rose Hill, while South Lenoir slipped to third.
Senior Kiley Smith was a standout for the Blue Devils, leading the team in aces, kills, and blocks with 18 kills, three aces, and five blocks. Katherine Thompson, another senior, led in serve attempts with 25 and contributed two aces.
The Lady Blue Devils will look to rebound as they travel to face the James Kenan Lady Tigers (1-11) on Thursday afternoon.
