Arendell Parrott Academy Ends the Five-Year Losing Streak to Rocky Mount Academy in Boys' Tennis
Arendell Parrott Academy (APA) pulled off an exciting victory against Rocky Mount Academy (RMA) in boys' tennis on Thursday, ending the Eagles' five-year winning streak.
Despite a slow start in singles, where APA found themselves down 4-2, the team rallied and won all three doubles courts to secure a 5-4 victory. Senior J. Allen Smith and Senior Ted Bratton were crucial in sealing the win for APA, winning number one doubles in a closely contested match.
The victory was especially sweet for the Patriots, as RMA had defeated them 8-1 in both matches last year. Coach Robert Dawson was full of praise for his team's efforts.
"We have been working on doubles every day since the beginning of practice," coach Dawson said. "It just so happened that we needed all three courts, and these guys showed up. They have been working and improving a lot during the offseason, and it showed today!"
In singles, APA's J. Allen Smith defeated RMA's Darshan Patel 6-3, 6-1 in the number one spot, while Perry Mizelle secured a win for APA against RMA's Terance Pittman with a score of 6-2, 6-2. However, RMA dominated the other four singles matches, leaving APA with a lot of ground to make up in doubles.
In the doubles portion of the match, APA's Wali Omer and Will Rouse won number two doubles against RMA 8-6, while Max Beegleman and Perry Mizelle won number three doubles against RMA 8-6.
However, it was the number one doubles match that proved to be the decider, as J. Allen Smith and Ted Bratton defeated RMA 9-8, 7-3 in a tiebreaker.
This was a special moment for the senior heavy Patriots team as they were able to get over a hump that has been an obstacle for the majority of their tennis career. APA looks to continue to carry this success into their next match Monday at Greene Central High School.
