A Tribute to "Manny"

A Tribute to "Manny"

The South Lenoir High School community recently gathered to mourn the loss of Manuel "Manny" Lopez, a beloved student and athlete. Known for his participation in soccer and wrestling, Manny's impact on his peers and coaches was profound and lasting. His services were held on April 3rd at Howard Carter Funeral Home, followed by a graveside ceremony at West View Cemetery, marking a solemn occasion for all who knew him.

The Athletic Director at South Lenoir High School, Will Harrell, remembered Manny for his exceptional dedication and spirit.

"Manny was a great kid to be around on and off the field. Always willing to do anything I asked of him, and not afraid of a challenge. He was always respectful and loved by his peers," Harrell said, encapsulating the sentiments of many who worked with Manny.

Wrestling Coach Carlos Dodd provided further insight into Manny's character and influence.

"Manny was a very special young man, he had tons of potential in wrestling and no matter how hard I pushed him, he would always find a way to be positive. He was the humor for the team and it usually was perfectly timed to lighten the mood," Dodd shared, highlighting Manny's ability to bring lightness even in challenging times.

Dodd also mentioned plans to honor Manny's memory through a 'Most Outstanding Wrestler' award, a testament to Manny's enduring legacy in the wrestling community.

Teammates and friends of Manny shared their memories, offering a glimpse into the deep connections he formed.

"Manny, you were the most positive person I knew. You never went anywhere without a smile on your face. He had a personality and sense of humor that was unmatched and his laugh was the most contagious thing ever. Manny was an amazing athlete who always did his best to uplift his teammates during hard times. Nothing is going to be the same without you," one teammate recalled, emphasizing Manny's uplifting presence.

Another shared, "There’s a lot in life that me and you didn’t understand but we knew what love is and knew we had someone who would be for us through and through, Manny I wish you were here man. Just know I’m gonna live life for you and I hope you're at peace right now goodbye Manny,” expressing a heartfelt farewell and commitment to honoring Manny's memory.

"Manny, you were always joyful and had a smile on your face. When you were my wrestling partner, we always pushed each other to our limits even if we were tired. We always dreamed of making states together... I always looked at you as my little brother, it's not going to be the same with you gone compa," another teammate said, capturing the sense of loss and the close bond they shared.

Through these reflections, Manny's friends and teammates paint a picture of a young man whose joy, resilience, and camaraderie left an indelible mark on those around him. His legacy at South Lenoir High School, both on the field and off, will be remembered with fondness and respect.
