Byrd strikes out 16 batters in a defensive battle with Wayne Christian
Garrett Byrd of Arendell Parrott Academy (9-4) stood out in a game with strong pitching by securing a victory for his team over the Wayne Christian Eagles (4-2).
Byrd launched a solo homerun in the fourth inning. The Patriots sophomore pitched seven innings, allowing no runs on just three hits while striking out 16 and walking none.
"I knew it was going to be a tough game coming into it. They were throwing an ECU recruit," said Byrd. "I knew it was going to be a pitchers' duel exchanging strikeouts. He pitched his heart out, but we made the important plays and key hits."
ECU commit, Brandon Benkovics, led the charge for the Wayne Christian Eagles, both on the mound and at the plate. Benkovics pitched five and a third innings, surrendering four runs on three hits and striking out 12. Nate Peck and Colin Millerd provided relief, throwing one inning and two-thirds of an inning, respectively. At the plate, Benkovics went 2-for-3, leading the Eagles in hits.
Commenting on his team's defensive performance, Byrd said, "Well played defensive game, one of our best this year."
Arendell Parrott Academy's coach Krav praised Byrd's efforts, saying, "I thought Garrett did an excellent job of pounding the zone. His command was great, and Cole Smith did an excellent job of calling the game. Overall, I thought the team played great, the defense was good, and we needed to do a better job on the bases. I'm happy to come out of there with a win."
APA will face off against John Paul II (8-4) in Greenville on Monday, April 3rd.
