Greene Central Tennis Aces Round One of the Playoffs
The Greene Central High School men's tennis team emerged victorious in the first round of the NCHSAA Dual Team Playoffs, defeating J.F. Webb-Oxford with a convincing 5-0 score. The #7 seed Rams, boasting a 12-6 record, outperformed the #10 seed Warriors, who held a 6-12 record prior to the match.
In the singles matches, Greene Central's players showcased their skills on the court:
William Drake (GC) dominated Ace Currin (W) with a 6-0, 6-0 win.
Dustin Brown (GC) overcame Aidan Bowen (W), securing a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
Sam Avent (GC) triumphed over Josh Tomas (W) with an impressive 6-0, 6-0 score.
Nick Avent (GC) defeated Anthony Bell (W) in a 6-0, 6-1 match.
Bryson Warrick (GC) bested Angelo Webb (W) with a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
With the overall match results settled, the #6 singles play was suspended, and the doubles matches were left unplayed.
Freshman twin brothers Sam and Nick Avent expressed satisfaction with the win but were disappointed that their doubles match was not played. Sam mentioned, "Upset us a little bit, but we do have regionals coming up this Friday and Saturday."
Nick commented on his performance, saying, "I thought we played well. We had some challenges with the wind, but we fought through it." When asked if they experienced any first-game jitters or pressure during their first playoff game, both brothers responded confidently, "No, we've been doing this our whole lives."
The Rams now advance to Round 2, where they will face North Johnston High School, who hold an 18-3 record. North Johnston defeated Washington 8-1 in their Round 1 match. This upcoming match will be a rematch of a close 4-5 loss to North Johnston back in March.
Stay tuned as Greene Central High School's men's tennis team takes on #2 seed (18-3) North Johnston High School in the second round of the NCHSAA Dual Team Playoffs.
