South Lenoir wins in Double OT, Moves Up in Standings
In a thrilling match that stretched into double overtime, South Lenoir's girls' soccer team emerged victorious over Wallace Rose Hill with a 4-2 scoreline. Emily Jones led the charge with two critical goals, including the decisive scores in double overtime, highlighting her crucial role in the team's success. Junior Zulma Lopez also made headlines, scoring her first goal of the season and adding an assist. Seniors Emily Gonzalez and Katie Wooten contributed a goal each, with Claudia Castillo providing an assist. Junior goaltender Gracie Tyndall was instrumental in the win, making nine saves.
This victory brings South Lenoir's season record to 6-6 and 2-3 in conference play, positioning them in a three-way tie for third place. The game was especially memorable as it coincided with Coach Tayler Floyd's birthday, which the team celebrated by dousing her with a Gatorade/water bath. In her post-game interview, Floyd reflected on the team's journey and resilience. "I think they are amazing. We have been through the trenches and have come back up," she said, praising her team's effort and ability to overcome adversity. She emphasized the need for improvement in quick passes and communication but remained confident these aspects could be enhanced.
Coach Floyd also singled out Zulma Lopez for praise, noting her breakthrough goal. "Zulma here got her first goal, so watch out, here she comes," Floyd remarked, signaling Lopez as a player to watch in the future.
Reflecting on what lies ahead for the team, Floyd outlined her approach: "We can work on somethings... we will praise the good, work the bad and keep improving." She stressed the collective effort and spirit that propelled them to victory, "My whole team [did good]... we have amazing people who worked hard in overtime working over the tiredness and working for that dub."
With a focus on tactical improvements and the fostering of a strong team ethos, South Lenoir looks forward to the rest of the season with optimism. Coach Floyd's belief in her team's ability to address and rectify areas for growth, combined with their proven resilience, sets a positive tone for their upcoming challenges.
