SNOW HILL – Greene Central basketball teams shined Tuesday night, sweeping all three games against county rivals North Lenoir in front of an energetic home crowd. The Rams showcased their depth and dominance on both ends of the court.
JV Rams Stay Perfect
The JV team started the night strong with a 70-59 win, moving to 2-0 on the season. Kameron Tyson led all scorers with 19 points, including hitting 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. Dejuan Beamon followed with 15 points and four assists. All five starters scored in double figures, with Trey Bynum contributing 10 points and leading the team with eight rebounds.
Varsity Girls Dominate Hawks
The Greene Central varsity girls moved to 2-0 with a commanding 60-37 victory over the Hawks, adding to their 64-36 opening win over Beddingfield. Janiyah Sutton and An’nysha Wooten each scored 14 points, with Wooten posting an impressive stat line: 23 rebounds, six assists, three steals, and two blocks. Sykiah Lancaster added 13 points, while Jayce Russell contributed nine points and 13 rebounds. Senior point guard Arlisha Mason chipped in six points, seven assists, three rebounds, and a steal.
The Rams set the tone early, holding the Hawks to just two points in the first quarter while scoring 18. North Lenoir’s freshman point guard Cassidee Frazier fought hard, scoring seven of the Hawks' nine first-half points, with sophomore Taisheena Lynch adding two. Greene Central led 31-9 at halftime.
The Hawks improved in the second half, scoring 29 points to Greene Central’s 30, but it wasn’t enough. Frazier finished with 19 points, and Lynch added six. Hawks head coach Tammy Elbert praised her team’s preparation: "These girls have put in the work all summer. I have opened the gym all summer, and they have showed up—and it’s showing on the court."
Varsity Boys Seal the Sweep
The Rams’ varsity boys capped the night with an explosive 65-46 win over the Hawks, coming off a 65-50 victory over Beddingfield. The Hawks entered the matchup at 2-1 after a 42-35 loss to Southwest Edgecombe the night before.
Greene Central controlled the first half, spreading the scoring across seven players and taking a 29-17 lead at halftime. North Lenoir struggled offensively, with Chris Veal (7) and Anton Black (6) the only players to score in the half.
The Hawks found momentum in the third quarter, outscoring Greene Central 13-7 and cutting the deficit to 37-30 heading into the fourth. But the Rams exploded in the final frame, pouring in 28 points. Sophomore guard Josh Cetnar sparked the run with 10 fourth-quarter points, helping Greene Central pull away for the convincing win.
Four Rams scored in double figures: Cetnar led with 15 points, five steals, and a block; Nick Avent had 12 points, four rebounds, and three steals; Dontrez Evans contributed 10 points, seven rebounds, one assist, and seven steals; and DJ Williams added 10 points, three rebounds, and three steals.
