North Lenoir’s Standout Maddie Rouse Signs with USC Aiken

LA GRANGE — Maddie Rouse, the 2024 NNS Softball MVP and a standout for North Lenoir High School, signed her letter of intent Wednesday to continue her softball career at the University of South Carolina Aiken. The signing marks the culmination of a journey filled with hard work, perseverance, and unwavering support from her family and coaches.

“I am very excited; it has been a heck of a journey,” Rouse said. “I honestly thought I would never get committed, but then at one random tournament, they reached out and showed their interest in me.”

A Record-Breaking Career

Rouse’s impact on the field has been nothing short of extraordinary. In just two varsity seasons, she played 35 games, posting a staggering .571 batting average in 91 at-bats. She amassed 52 hits, including 16 doubles, 7 triples, and 10 home runs—one of which was a grand slam. She drove in 63 runs, scored 59 times, and maintained a .704 on-base percentage, striking out only four times while drawing 38 walks.

But her excellence isn’t confined to the batter’s box. On the mound, Rouse has been North Lenoir’s ace. Last season, she went 11-1 with 85 strikeouts. Over her career, she holds a 15-6 record with a 4.47 ERA, 154 strikeouts, and 71 walks across 159 innings.

“She’s not only our best hitter but also our best pitcher,” said North Lenoir head coach Bobby Hatcher, who returned to coach Rouse and several of her teammates during her sophomore year.

Early Start and Commitment

Rouse began her softball journey at 6 or 7 years old but didn’t decide to pursue college softball until eighth grade. “I dropped volleyball to focus solely on softball,” she said. “I’ve been grinding pretty hard.”

Her father, Joe Rouse, recalls the moment Maddie’s focus shifted. “When she realized she could be really good at it, probably around the 12U age range, that’s when she flipped the switch,” he said. “It’s kind of one of those deals where we weren’t going to push it on her, but once she started pushing herself, we were all in.”

Joe added, “We’ve always chased competition instead of trophies.”

Maddie’s mother, Leslie Rouse, emphasized the family’s commitment. “The journey has been tough, but I tell you, God has been there every step of the way,” she said. “If it wasn’t for her dedication and hard work, plus the prayers, this dream wouldn’t have happened.”

Leslie noted the shift in their routine as Maddie grew older and more competitive. “When she was in 8U and 10U, most games were close to home, but by 12U, things got serious,” she said. “Teams started traveling out of state, with the closest tournaments often being in Myrtle Beach.”

A Supportive Network

Maddie attributes much of her success to the people around her. “I’ve been blessed to have very good coaches,” she said. “They’re not worried about losing; they’re more focused on playing the right way and having a great attitude.”

Hatcher, who helped establish Maddie’s travel team in 2014 alongside Joe Rouse, Jesse Sutton, and Glenn Whitley, praised her growth. “We went through hours of practice back then, and now we’re recognizing this young lady for signing to play at the next level,” Hatcher said. “She’s always worked hard, stayed humble, and never got down on herself. That’s what makes a great ballplayer, and that’s Maddie to a ‘T.’”

Maddie’s parents have also been by her side every step of the way. “My parents have been there the whole time,” Maddie said. “They’ve taken me to every single game and fortunately could afforded everything I needed. I’m very blessed.”

Joe’s message to his daughter reflects his pride and optimism: “Keep working hard. With hard work and dedication on and off the field, you’ll fulfill all your dreams. You’ve done that since you were a little girl, and we are so proud of you.”

Looking Ahead

As Maddie prepares for her next chapter at USC Aiken, her journey serves as a testament to the power of dedication, family support, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. For North Lenoir and the Rouse family, the future looks as bright as ever.
