North Lenoir Stuns Midway in Double OT, Advances to Second Round
SPIVEY’S CORNER, N.C. — North Lenoir delivered a thrilling comeback performance in the first round of the NCHSAA 2A soccer playoffs, defeating No. 10 seed (15-6-1) Midway 4-3 in double overtime. The Hawks, seeded No. 23, overcame a 3-1 halftime deficit on the road, with Maddox Smith’s hat trick leading the charge. Sophomore Yahir Hernandez added a crucial goal, and goalkeeper Evan Smith’s eight saves kept the Hawks in the fight.
“This was a tough game, and our boys fought hard,” said North Lenoir head coach Chris Evans. “At halftime, I told them they had to lean on each other. Everything would work out if they believed in each other and didn’t quit.”
North Lenoir trailed 3-1 at the break, with Midway senior Luis Florido showcasing why he’s their top scorer. But the Hawks came out rejuvenated in the second half, chipping away at Midway’s lead. Smith’s relentless attack led to two second-half goals, leveling the score at 3-3 and forcing overtime.
In the second overtime period, Smith completed his hat trick, securing a dramatic victory for the Hawks. Hernandez’s earlier goal provided the spark North Lenoir needed to claw back into the game. Meanwhile, Evan Smith’s steady presence in goal, including several key saves in extra time, ensured the Hawks’ defense held strong.
“I’m always proud of these guys when they play as hard as they do,” Evans added. “They believed all week that no matter who we played, they would find a way to win.”
Looking Ahead: Second Round Showdown
North Lenoir’s journey continues on Nov. 12 in the second round. The Hawks will face the winner of No. 7 Southern Alamance (15-6) and No. 26 Southwest Edgecombe (13-7-2). If Southwest Edgecombe wins, North Lenoir will host the game, giving their home fans a chance to witness another thrilling matchup. Should Southern Alamance prevail, the Hawks will hit the road again.
