North Lenoir Girls Start Strong with Season-Opening Win Over Spring Creek
The North Lenoir girls' basketball team kicked off the 2024-25 season with a 46-38 victory over Spring Creek, fueled by a dominant second half. After trailing at halftime, the Lady Hawks roared back with a 29-point surge, including a game-changing 17-point third quarter.
Freshman Cassadie Frazier led the charge, scoring 19 points in her high school debut. She showcased her defensive tenacity with six steals while running the point, providing a glimpse of her potential on both ends of the floor.
“I was nervous,” Frazier admitted postgame. Adjusting to the high school level, she noted, “The opponents’ defense is a lot tougher.” On her impressive debut performance, she added, “I didn’t expect to score 19. I just wanted to help my team get the win and focus on my defense.”
The Lady Hawks had balanced scoring across the board:
- Kennedi Starkie: 8 points
- Ta’sheena Lynch: 6 points
- Myracle Samples: 3 points
- Jayshaynna Kittrell: 4 points
- Janiya Maye: 2 points
- Sieanna Robinson: 2 points
- Jaelynn Tetterton: 2 points
Despite the win, head coach Wooley saw areas for improvement. “We started out shaky, committing 15 fouls in the first half,” he said. “We have to get better at playing defense without fouling.”
Wooley praised the team’s energy, saying, “I like the effort and I like the energy, we just have to know how to use it.” However, he acknowledged the team's inexperience, with five seniors lost to graduation.
Regarding Frazier’s performance, Wooley was optimistic. “First game, she does a lot of good stuff. Her best aspect is her defense; she’s so athletic,” he said. “She’ll learn as she goes, and overall, I’m pleased with how she played. She’s only going to get better.”
The Lady Hawks are coming off a 10-16 season and are eager to build on their season-opening momentum. This marks the third consecutive year Coach Wooley has secured a win to start the season.
With a young core and promising talent, North Lenoir looks to develop and compete as the season progresses.
