Lenoir Community College Hosts First Pitch Fundraiser with Mike Fox and George Whitfield
Lenoir Community College (LCC) is set to host its highly anticipated annual First Pitch Fundraiser on Tuesday, January 16th, at 6:00 p.m. in the LCC Gymnasium. The evening promises to be a celebration of athletics, history, and community, featuring Mike Fox, legendary former UNC Baseball Coach, as the guest speaker and George Whitfield, a Kinston native and coaching icon, as the guest of honor.

A Night of Recognition and Celebration
The evening will kick off with a “Meet the Lancers” social from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m., where attendees can mingle with LCC Volleyball and Baseball players. This will be followed by the introduction of the 2024-25 Volleyball and Baseball teams, a recap of the 2024 Volleyball season, and a preview of the 2025 Baseball season.
LCC will also take time to honor its storied history in athletics, recognizing all former LCC athletes in attendance and celebrating retired jersey players from the LCC Men’s Basketball program.
Dinner, provided by Nana’s Catering, will add a delicious touch to the event, ensuring a memorable experience for all.
Spotlight on Mike Fox: Guest Speaker
Mike Fox, one of the most decorated figures in collegiate baseball, will headline the event as the guest speaker. Fox, a North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame inductee, spent 22 seasons as the head coach at the University of North Carolina, amassing 1,487 career wins and leading the Tar Heels to seven College World Series appearances. His coaching career began at NC Wesleyan, where he guided the team to a 1989 NCAA Division III College World Series championship.
As a player, Fox donned Carolina Blue as a second baseman for the Tar Heels from 1976 to 1978. His legacy is one of excellence, leadership, and an enduring impact on the sport.
Honoring George Whitfield: Guest of Honor
The night will also honor George Whitfield, a true icon in baseball and a proud Kinston native. Whitfield played both baseball and basketball at Lees-McRae College, graduated from East Carolina University, and made his mark as a coach across various levels. His accolades include a state championship at Arendell Parrott Academy, coaching stints at Mississippi State University, East Carolina University, and Pitt Community College.
Whitfield is a member of numerous halls of fame, including the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, North Carolina Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame, and the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame. His contributions to the game and his community have left an indelible legacy.
