Lenoir Community College Celebrates 4th Annual Jessica Ramsey Memorial Volleyball Tournament
Lenoir Community College (LCC) successfully hosted the 4th Annual Jessica Ramsey Memorial Volleyball Tournament on August 12, 2023, a heartfelt tribute to South Lenoir Volleyball player Jessica Ramsey, who tragically passed away in 2018.
The tournament brought together eight high schools: South Lenoir High School, Farmville Central High School, Perquimans High School, South Johnston High School, Arendell Parrott Academy, Neuse Charter High School, Richlands High School, and Harnett Central High School.
Shelly Barnes, the athletic director of Lenoir Community College, expressed her gratitude and honor in hosting the event.
"It is such an honor to host a Jessica Ramsey tournament; as tragic as that situation was, we are trying to turn it to good as best we can. The family wanted to turn a scholarship in her memory. It's great for the community; we are bringing in a lot of local talent from all around eastern North Carolina, and stands are full, and it's fun," said Barnes.
Barnes also highlighted the involvement of Jessica's family, who served concessions and actively supported the event.
"We love being able to host this tournament; we love to be able to get high schools in to see our school; it's a win for everybody," she added.
The event kicked off at 9:00 a.m., with a minimal admission fee of $7.00 per person, and concessions available throughout the day. Proceeds from the tournament will contribute to a volleyball scholarship in Jessica's memory.
The tournament concluded with Perquimans County High School Volleyball team winning the Championship match against Farmville Central in a thrilling third set. Farmville defeated Arendell Parrott Academy to advance to the championships, and Perquimans defeated Richlands before making it to the championship.
