Kyonna Kelly Paves the Way for Young Girls with All-Girls Basketball Clinic
Kyonna Kelly, a senior at Kinston High School, has not only demonstrated her skills on the basketball court but also her remarkable ambition to make a difference in her community before graduating. Her initiative to host a free basketball clinic for young girls exemplifies her leadership and commitment to fostering growth and opportunity in women's basketball.
As Kelly nears the end of her high school journey, her decision to organize this clinic reflects a maturity and foresight beyond her years. She recognized a lack of opportunities for young girls to formally learn basketball skills and proactively addressed this by providing a supportive environment for skill development.
"Girls don't have the opportunity to showcase their talent or actually learn the game of basketball; they are just thrown into the fire and expected to learn the game. So, I wanted to give these girls the opportunity that I did not have," Kyonna explained, underscoring her motivation to lead by example and pave the way for future generations.
The clinic benefited from the involvement of notable players like Kinston’s Carmen Davis and Katherine Thompson from South Lenoir High School, as well as former Kinston player Tish Dixon. Their participation not only enhanced the learning experience but also highlighted the collaborative spirit among local athletes. These contributors brought diverse perspectives and shared their expertise in basketball, enriching the camp's environment and providing the participants with real-world basketball development into the sport.
Reflecting on the clinic's success and her ability to influence positively, Kelly said, "I think it was a very good successful camp. I did one previously and it wasn’t as successful, but this one is the start of something I can grow."
Kelly’s initiative and the support from figures like Carmen, Katherine, and Tish, not only enriched the participants' experience but also demonstrated a strong network of female athletes committed to nurturing the next generation. As Kyonna prepares to graduate, her efforts leave a lasting legacy at Kinston High and stand as a beacon for others who aspire to make a meaningful impact in their communities.
