Kopanski: Tough as nails
DEEP RUN— Track and Field might seem easy but is debatable one of the hardest sports to prepare for.
To take it a step further, being a distance runner has no glory, shine, glitter or anything but strenious pain and hard work.
South Lenoir High School's Derek Kopanski is forging his own path, focusing on the grueling discipline of Cross Country and Track & Field, a commitment that has recently earned him a spot on the Campbell University's cross country and track teams this coming fall.
Kopanski's decision to stick with running wasn't a mere act of chance; it was backed by six long years of experience, starting from his time at Woodington Middle School. Over the years, he has learned to ride the physical and mental waves that come with this punishing sport. .
His achievements have been numerous under the tutelage of Coach Carlos Dodd, with Kopanski securing several top-10 finishes in state championships in the 2A division. However, Kopanski's road to success hasn't been without its hurdles. "The last several track seasons I haven’t quite had the seasons I had been hoping for," he admits, crediting Coach Dodd's unwavering confidence in him as the key to his eventual triumph.
Under Dodd's guidance, Kopanski found himself running the 4x8, 1600, 800, and 4x4 events and occasionally stepping into either the 3200 or the 400. His best times stand as a testament to his growth and perseverance in the sport: an 800m in 2:04, a 1600m in 4:57, and a 3200m in 11:02.
Physical discomfort and mental battles are a part of Kopanski's journey, as they are with most endurance athletes. He states, "Physically it was normal for me to feel pretty bad during and after a run and probably even worst the next day when I woke up." But it's his mental fortitude that sets him apart. He understands that running, more than any other sport, demands resilience.
Despite his success, Kopanski remains humble, saying, "To be completely honest I don’t think that I am any better than one of the worst runners on the team." This humility, coupled with a tireless work ethic and unwavering commitment to excellence, makes him a standout athlete.
The young runner recognizes that he didn't make this journey alone. He credits his past elder teammates like Ian Ireland, Vian Villa, and Ethan Garris for seeing potential in him early on and encouraging him to pursue greatness.
As Derek Kopanski sets his sights on his next challenge at Campbell University, he leaves behind a legacy of dedication, grit, and an unwavering commitment to his sport. His story is a powerful reminder that success is not merely about natural talent but about the determination to give one's best, day in and day out.
Kopanski relentless pursuit of success displays him as tough as nails.
