Kinston High School’s TJ Bradshaw Awarded $1,000 Brightspeed Scholarship

On Thursday night at the Kinston High Varsity boys basketball game, Senior Timothy "TJ" Bradshaw Jr. was presented with a $1,000 scholarship from Brightspeed. TJ, a standout linebacker, played a crucial role in helping the Vikings reach the 4th round of the NCHSAA 2A playoffs this season.

TJ was among several students from Kinston High who applied for the scholarship. The application process required students to write an essay and answer questions about their community involvement and its importance, as well as their contributions to both their school and community.

TJ, who plans to attend NC A&T and play football, expressed his excitement about receiving the scholarship. “It feels good, it helps me out a lot, and it helps me toward school,” TJ said after the presentation.

The cost of college has more than doubled over the past four decades, leading to a rise in student loan debt. According to the Federal Reserve, student loan debt in the U.S. has increased by 66% over the past decade and now totals more than $1.74 trillion.

The scholarship was presented by Steve Brewer, Director of Government Affairs & Public Policy at Brightspeed. “We are very pleased to participate in our local communities, offering scholarships to deserving students,” Brewer said following the presentation.

In 2023, Charlotte-based Brightspeed, one of the nation’s leading internet providers, launched its Bright Futures Scholarship Tour. This initiative recognizes high-achieving high school seniors in rural North Carolina communities who demonstrate strong academic performance, leadership, and commitment to their communities.
