Kinston Dominate Hawks on Senior Night
In a heartwarming senior night filled with celebration and high spirits, Kinston High School's basketball team, under the guidance of Coach Perry Tyndall, honored its graduating players in a way that left an indelible mark on the hearts of many. The night was especially memorable as all seniors started the game, showcasing the depth and unity of the team with a 76-49 win over North Lenoir.
Coach Tyndall shared his admiration for the seniors, particularly highlighting Marquez Graham's unforgettable moment.
"I wished we had a different start of the game for what Marquez did. For him to step out there and play and hit that three-point shot is just awesome and a memory he will never forget," Tyndall reflected. Despite facing challenges with injuries over the past two years, Graham's spirit and leadership have been a beacon for the team.
"He's incredible, he's good, his voice is always there. His injury has held him back a lot the past two years, but he is like another coach and leader out there. He is very deserving of that moment," Tyndall added, praising Graham's perseverance and contribution to the team's morale.
The Sanders brothers, Khalil and Khalid, were also lauded by Tyndall for their infectious energy and defensive prowess. "Khalil and Khalid, they are deserving separately, but when you look at them, they are lightning in a bottle. They are energy givers, they set the standard defensively, ever since they moved here. Great program kids," Tyndall stated, underscoring their vital role in shaping the team's competitive spirit.
Tecarlo Parker's commitment to the team did not go unnoticed, with Tyndall commending his dedication and resilience. "Tecarlo has been a program kid, he's been here every step of the way, grinder, has fought through a lot, knows his role as a defender and an incredible player," he said, acknowledging Parker's steadfast loyalty and defensive skills.
Graham's leadership, despite battling injuries, earned him high praise. "Quez Graham fighting through two years of injury, but has been a great kid and player, his leadership has been incredible," Tyndall remarked, highlighting the senior's impactful presence both on and off the court.
Sebastian Patino, the team manager, was recognized for his behind-the-scenes contributions that have been pivotal to the team's success. "Sebastian is unsung; no one really wants to talk about the manager, but he is the glue guy behind the scenes. All the seniors deserved a fun night," Tyndall noted, appreciating Fateino's crucial role in the team's dynamics.
Tyndall also commended the team's defensive efforts, especially in the second half, which significantly contributed to their victory. "I thought we were really really good defensively in the second half, not letting them do what they wanted to do," he observed, celebrating the team's adaptability and resilience.
The Vikings finished their regular season with a triumphant win over conference opponent and cross-town rivals North Lenoir, concluding the evening on a high note. The pre-game ceremony honored all winter sports seniors, further highlighting the school's supportive community. The game itself was a showcase of Kinston's depth and talent, with the team overcoming an early deficit to secure a decisive 71-35 run, led by notable performances from Keyshawn Herring (15 points) and Tyreek Copper (17 points), alongside the Sanders brothers' combined 21 points.
Kinston's season record stands impressively at 18-5, with an 11-1 mark in conference play. However, the battle for the conference title remains tight, potentially leading to a tiebreaker with Southwest Onslow, as Tyndall emphasized the importance of determining the outcome through competition rather than chance. "I didn't think with that much on the line, it should have been decided over a coin toss," Tyndall stated, advocating for a fair and competitive resolution.
Senior night at Kinston High School was not just a game; it was a celebration of perseverance, teamwork, and the unbreakable bond shared by athletes and coaches. Each senior left a lasting legacy, marking a night filled with unforgettable moments and powerful testimonials to the spirit of high school sports.
