Jerry Stackhouse wins co-coach of the year in the SEC
Jerry Stackhouse, a Kinston native, has made a huge impact in the world of college basketball. As the head coach of Vanderbilt, he has led his team to great heights and has now been recognized for his efforts. The SEC has named Stackhouse Co-Coach of the Year, tying with Texas A&M head coach Buzz Williams.
Stackhouse took Vanderbilt from a projected 12th place finish in the SEC to a tied 4th place finish, with an impressive 18-13 record in the regular season. The team is now poised to make a run at the NCAA Tournament as they compete in the SEC Tournament this week.
The former All-American player at the University of North Carolina has a record of 57-67 in four seasons at Vanderbilt, and each year his teams have improved. Stackhouse signed a contract extension with the university in October after bringing in a top-25 recruiting class.
Vanderbilt's Vice Chancellor for Athletics and University Affairs and Athletic Director, Candice Story Lee, has recognized the positive impact that Coach Stackhouse has had on the program. Lee stated, "The positive trajectory of our men's basketball program under Coach Stackhouse is clear." She went on to say that investing in him as the leader of the program is crucial in building a championship-caliber team at Vanderbilt.
