Greene Central JV Rams Stay Perfect with 81-74 Win Over Garner in Tarboro Invitational
The Greene Central JV boys basketball team capped off a dominant performance in the JV Invitational at Tarboro High School with an 81-74 victory over previously unbeaten Garner in the championship game. The JV Rams improved to 6-0, handing the Trojans (4-1) their first loss of the season. Garner had dominated their prior games, including a 64-26 win over Hertford in the first round, before meeting Greene Central’s relentless attack.
In the first round, Greene Central set the tone for their tournament run with an impressive 62-39 win over Southern Nash. Both teams advanced to the final after decisive victories, but the championship matchup proved to be a far closer and hard-fought battle.
Coach Johnson Praises Defensive Focus and Team Effort
JV Head Coach Boneree Johnson highlighted the importance of teamwork and defensive intensity in the Rams’ success. “We have a very young team this season, and we are working on creating our pace and forcing the other team to play our game. Our ultimate goal this season is that defense wins ball games and everybody eats!”
Game Recap: Beamon's Shooting and Team Contributions Shine
The Rams came out firing in the championship game, led by Dejuan Beamon’s red-hot shooting. Beamon sank four three-pointers in the opening quarter, setting the tone for an explosive offensive performance. His efforts earned him MVP honors for the tournament.
“Dejuan was MVP for a reason,” Coach Johnson said.
Trey Bynum was a consistent force throughout the game, leading the Rams in rebounds, assists, and steals. His all-around contributions made him a key factor in Greene Central’s ability to control the game.
“Trey led us in boards, assists, and steals the entire game,” Johnson noted.
Sophomore Mathew Sanders also delivered a standout performance, creating turnovers with aggressive defense and sparking the team’s offensive momentum with his ability to attack the basket. “Mathew created the momentum and pace of the game by being aggressive with steals and attacking the basket. He also created several turnovers for the opposing team,” Johnson said.
Both Bynum and Sanders were named to the All-Tournament team for their efforts.
Dominant Tournament Play
The championship victory followed Greene Central’s impressive first-round win over Southern Nash, where the Rams secured a 62-39 triumph. Garner, on the other hand, advanced to the final after routing Hertford 64-26 in their first-round matchup. The championship was a much closer contest, with both teams showcasing their talent and tenacity, but Greene Central’s depth and defensive focus ultimately prevailed.
Looking Ahead
Greene Central’s JV team is off to a perfect 6-0 start, with their defense and balanced scoring attack proving to be the foundation of their success. Coach Johnson’s emphasis on teamwork and defensive intensity has clearly resonated with his young squad, as they continue to grow and perform at a high level.
