Greene Central Falls to Beddingfield 14-6, Turnovers and Missed Opportunities Plague Rams

Greene Central's football team suffered another tough loss on Friday night, falling to Beddingfield 14-6. The defeat moves the Rams to a 1-2 record on the season, coming off a heartbreaking 34-29 loss to Kinston last week.

The Rams struggled to find their footing in the first half. Despite an early interception by Jaylen Wynn that put them in excellent field position, Greene Central couldn't capitalize. "We moved the ball up and down the field, we just didn't finish the drive," said Coach Jay Wilson. "We had mistakes at the most crucial times to stall drives."

Beddingfield, on the other hand, found success on the ground. The Bruins ran a heavy dosage of quarterback power plays, racking up 230 rushing yards for the game. By halftime, Beddingfield led 8-0.

Greene Central's defense came alive in the second half, stopping the Bruins' initial drive. The Rams' offense then took over, driving down the field with a balanced attack from running backs James Ballard and Justice Debro. Ballard finished the game with 15 rushes for 75 yards, while Debro had 11 rushes for 82 yards.

Quarterback Will Radford, who finished with 3-10 for 51 yards, six rushes for 15 yards, one rushing touchdown, and two fumbles, managed to punch in a 2-yard quarterback sneak. The score narrowed the gap to 8-6 with 6:42 left in the third quarter.

However, the Rams' momentum was short-lived. Beddingfield's quarterback Bryson Wagner led another successful drive, culminating in a 6-yard rushing touchdown that extended their lead to 14-6 with 3:32 left in the third.

Greene Central had one last chance to turn the tide. With 3:45 left in the game, Debro broke free for a long run that put the Rams in scoring territory on the 12 yard line. But disaster struck on the next play as Radford fumbled while scrambling in the pocket, allowing Beddingfield to recover the ball and run down the clock to secure their victory.

"Defensively the guys played their heart out, with the exception of a couple of plays where they got the edge on us," Coach Wilson said. "But it has to be WE football, and right now we are playing too much 'me' and 'I' instead of playing for each other."

As Greene Central moves to 1-2 on the season, the team will need to address its turnover issues and find a way to capitalize on opportunities if they hope to turn their season around. The Rams will look to rebound next Friday when they host Eastern Wayne at home. With crucial games ahead, they have little time to dwell on their mistakes.
