Coach Perry Secures First Career Win as Jones Senior Dominates in 34-0 Victory
Trenton, NC – The Jones Senior Trojans made history last Friday night with a commanding 34-0 victory over Liberty Christian, marking their first win since September 29, 2022, and snapping a 15-game losing streak. In their first-ever game in the 8-man football format, the Trojans not only secured a decisive win but also showcased a newfound confidence and discipline on the field.
Head coach Stephen Perry, who is in his first year leading the Trojans after several years as an assistant, couldn't have asked for a better start to the season. "The first win was huge," Perry said. "As a coach, it's a great feeling to get the first one out of the way, even more so with it being the season opener and at home. Truly like taking a weight off of my chest and allows me to feel a little more relaxed."
Jones Senior outgunned Liberty Christian, racking up 12 first downs to their opponent's four and displaying superior discipline with just six penalties compared to Liberty's eight. The Trojans' dominance was evident from start to finish, with junior running back Cam McKinney stealing the show. McKinney carried the ball 10 times for a staggering 200 yards and two touchdowns, a performance that eclipsed the entire team's rushing output for the whole of last season.
"Cam was big, and we knew going into the season he would be," Perry said of McKinney. "He has the speed, skill, and determination to make things happen. And just like the rest of the team, he's tired of the losing mentality and is ready to change things. We're excited for him as he plays his junior year to see what he can really do to unlock his full potential on the field."
The Trojans' defense was equally impressive, led by senior Jamarquis Miller, who recorded eight tackles, including two for loss, one forced fumble, and a sack. Both Jacob Robins and Leven Jenkins added to the defensive effort with a sack apiece, contributing to a shutout that demonstrated the team's resilience and determination.
Reflecting on the team's preparation, Perry noted the shift in attitude compared to previous seasons. "From week to week, practice really hasn't changed much, and I'm okay with that," he said. "But compared to seasons prior, we have confidence, and we have excitement in practice. While we're not necessarily hanging on to the last win, it shows in the way they are not only on the field but in the school."
The victory also highlights a remarkable turnaround for a team that has struggled in recent years, with a combined record of 3-60 over the last six seasons. Friday's win offers a glimmer of hope for a program looking to rebuild and restore pride in its football tradition.
Next up, the Trojans will hit the road to face the (1-1) Howard Eagles in Wilson. As they prepare for their next challenge, the focus remains on maintaining the momentum from their historic win and continuing to build on the foundation laid in Week 1.
