North Lenoir Triumphs in Extra Innings: Crawford's Clutch Hit Seals Playoff Victory

In a thrilling extra-innings showdown, the #3 seed North Lenoir Hawks narrowly defeated the #11 seed Martin County 2-1 in the bottom of the 10th inning. The game, marked by stellar pitching and tense moments, advanced the Hawks further in the postseason.

Jackson Jenkins started on the mound for North Lenoir, delivering five solid innings by allowing just two hits and one earned run while striking out five. However, Jenkins did struggle with control, issuing seven walks. Eli Kearney took over from Jenkins, pitching a perfect final five innings, striking out seven and walking just one, showcasing the skills that has earned him a collegiate spot at Lenoir Community College.

North Lenoir's offense sparked in the bottom of the second inning when Ethan Smith drove in Wriston Honeycutt with a hard grounder up the middle, scoring the first run of the game. Martin County managed to tie the game on a walk, setting the stage for late-game heroics.

The game remained deadlocked until the bottom of the 10th when Blake Crawford, committed to UNC-Wilmington, hit a crucial ground ball down the third base line. The ball slipped through, allowing Aiden Clark to score the winning run from second base, sealing the victory for North Lenoir.

Postgame, Eli Kearney reflected on his performance, noting, "Everything felt great. I came in with high intensity, high anxiety for me as well. I calmed down and settled in quickly."

Coach Cam Sherrer added, "I knew from the start it was going to be a dog fight. We didn't know much about them, but all I could think of is they are in the third round just like we are. So, they are doing something right, they are a good baseball team, our guys just kept fighting, fighting and fighting."

Blake Crawford also commented on his game-winning hit, emphasizing the pressure of the moment with a full count before making contact. His hit not only delivered a dramatic win but also underscored the resilience and skill of the North Lenoir team as they continue their playoff journey.
